Detroit Broadcasting Company

Detroit Broadcasting Company (DBC), a member owned and operated media production and broadcasting company, is an exciting new online platform that will showcase arts and culture from the Detroit area and transmit it to the world. DBC will build and operate a live 24 hour internet broadcast stream and on demand video and audio content produced by members, beneficiaries, sponsors, partners, and affiliates of the 501c3 nonprofit, Chalfonte Foundation.

Chalfonte’s mission is to provide spiritual, psychosocial, recreational, and educational support to children and their families in need.

Staff

Brandon Walley
Program Director

.Brandon Walley is a filmmaker and curator based in Detroit, Michigan. He creates 16mm, Super 8mm, and digital films that explore the abstractions between humanity, ecology, industry, and technology. For over a decade, his films have been screened widely in festivals, museums, and cinematheques including Kunsthaus Graz (Austria), Strangloscope (Brazil), Rooftop Film (NYC), Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Iowa City Experimental Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, and more. Brandon has taught film production at various institutions including the College for Creative Studies, Lawrence Technological University, and YArts of Metro Detroit. He is former Program Director of Corktown Cinema and former Co-Director of the Detroit Film Center. Brandon has been Media City Film Festival’s Regional Artists’ Curator since 2008 and former Board Chair. His work is deeply embedded in Detroit’s cultural community, with a focus on art and moving image media. He brings adventurous film experiences to venues in Detroit, in partnership with organizations including the Hamtramck Free School, Trinosophes and Media City Film Festival. Brandon was an Artist Fellow with Kresge Arts in Detroit in 2020.

Maliyah Andrews-Jones
Intern, Spring/Summer 2023

Maliyah Adrienne is 16 and attends Westfield Preparatory High School in Detroit where she is a sophomore this fall and continues her early college courses. She is the oldest of 3, with a sister and brother. Maliyah’s favorite colors are red and purple and she likes to draw, paint and play keyboard and is currently learning to play guitar.

Meryl Walley
Intern, Spring/Summer 2023

Meryl Walley is 17, from Detroit, and is a senior in high school. Meryl has a twin sister, Karina, and an older sister, Quinn. She loves to dance, sing, play drums, make art and dress up.

Amira Yohannes
Intern, Spring/Summer 2023

Amira Yohannes is 16 and has 3 brothers. She is an artist that draws and paints and loves anything when it comes to creating. Her favorite place to go in Detroit is Eastern Market.

Chloe River
Intern, Fall 2022

.Chloe River is an interdisciplinary artist based in Detroit, currently studying at the College for Creative Studies. Working primarily in graphite and gouache, she is expanding into film, video editing and other versatile mediums with the goal of becoming an art director. She collects vintage fire cracker wrappers and is probably out right now searching for cool looking spiders.

Jordan Sain
Intern, Fall 2022

.Jordan Sain is a Senior at College for Creative Studies, graduating in Spring 2023. His primary focus is on post-production—Film, with a concentration on Visual Effects and Computer-Generated Environments. Jordan also has experience in pre-production. His journey has just begun, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.

Tara Twal
Intern, Fall 2022

Tara Twal is a filmmaker and video artist based in Detroit,MI. Most recently, she began working as a production intern for the Detroit Broadcasting Company. She also currently works as a premixing audio engineer for About Right Media Group and films video events with Blue Racer Productions. When she can, Twal fills many roles on local productions such as sound utility, assistant camera operator, and gripping. Previously, she has worked on Emmy nominated "Ahlan Simsim" (Sesame Street) based in Amman, Jordan as an intern assistant director. Twal hopes to expand her career after she graduates from College for Creative Studies in 2023 with a BA in Digital Film.

Natasha Beste

Natasha Beste is a video & installation artist, animator, performer, and educator born in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1982. Her work is unified through personal narratives surrounding the mind, body, and trauma. She received a BA in Media Arts and Communication from Wayne State University, in Detroit, MI (2005). Her work has been showcased at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Media City, DAMNED, Museum of Contemporary Arts Detroit (MOCAD), Northend Studios, and University of Michigan / Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design: work • detroit. She has been in collaboration with Kresge Arts in Detroit and Cranbrook Museum. Since 2010, she's been co-director of Gold House Media, a boutique video production company focusing on music videos, documentary, and television/podcast production whose work has helped socially progressive Detroit nonprofit organizations raise funds and win special award grants for vital programs. Since 2006, she has taught media arts in Michigan at Wayne State University and Marygrove University – also serving Detroit neighborhood programs including Boll Family Y-Arts and Ladybug Studios. She is currently teaching at the College for Creative Studies and Living Arts in Detroit, Michigan and lives in Oxford, Michigan.

bree gant

bree gant is a multidisciplinary artist born in Detroit, Michigan in 1989. Their work includes photography, video, film, dance, installation, and performance, employing figure and movement to study relationships between narrative, ritual, and temporality. They received a BA from Howard University (2011). Their work in film, performance, and installation, including Masquerade (2014), muva/On the River (2015), on vessels (2014), If we’re made of salt and memories, then so is the sea (2018), Core (2019), and on spirit (2020), has been exhibited at festivals, museums, and galleries, including BlackStar Film Festival, Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, African American Art and Culture Complex, Detroit Historical Museum, and Detroit Science Lab Gallery, among many others. They are the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and residencies, including a John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Arts Grant (2016), a Detroit Narrative Agency Fellowship (2017), an Art Matters Fellowship (2019), a Kresge Arts Fellowship (2020), a Red Bull Artist Residency (2012), and a Surf Point Foundation Artist Residency (2022). They are a founding member of CeBen Dance Collective (2021). They live and work in Detroit, Michigan.

Nicole Macdonald

Nicole Macdonald is a filmmaker, muralist and installation artist in Detroit who focuses on city history and neighborhood empowerment in her work. She has made large‐scale public installations for the past ten years as part of an ongoing series featuring city luminaries called “Detroit Portrait Series.” In the past she was co-director of the Detroit Film Center, and worked with the Prison Creative Arts Project, where she led workshops focused on visual arts for incarcerated women and juveniles at detention centers in Southeast Michigan. Her documentaries on the Detroit environment and city history have won Best Michigan Filmmaker at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Best Documentary at Humboldt Film Festival, and the John Michaels Filmmaker Award for Social Activism and Community Empowerment at the Big Muddy Film Festival, and have screened at Harlem International, and Full Frame film festivals. In the fall of 2021 she completed an artist residency in Abruzzo Italy working with local people to make art in a traditional Abruzzese ceramics method and do art workshops with refugees. Nicole is a 2017 Visual Arts Fellow with Kresge Arts in Detroit. She lives and works in Detroit, Michigan.

Scott Northrup

Scott Northrup is an artist, filmmaker, writer, curator, and educator born in Dearborn, Michigan in 1969. His work across media explores questions of love, lust, loss, and desire, especially the unspoken, unsure, and ephemeral. He received a BFA in Studio Art from the Center for Creative Studies (1992) and an MA in Media Studies from The New School (2003). He has completed 50+ moving image artworks since 1989, which have been exhibited at festivals, museums, and galleries, including The Museum of Modern Art, Art Basel Miami, White Columns, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Mothlight Microcinema, Printed Matter, Detroit Artists Market, and Media City Film Festival. He has undertaken residencies at The Museum of Loss and Renewal, Arteles Creative Center, and AICAD/New York Studio Residency Program. His own writing, and writing about his practice, has appeared in Hyperallergic, Krass Journal, DittoDitto, New Art Examiner, Detroit Art Review, and elsewhere. He is Professor and Chair of the Film, Photography, and Interdisciplinary Art + Design programs at College for Creative Studies in Detroit. He lives and works in Dearborn, Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan.
